Three ways to prepare for a media interview

Congratulations – you’ve landed a media interview! So how can you ensure interview success? As a former TV reporter, here is my advice in three words: Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Whether you have 5 minutes or 5 days until your interview, here are three ways to prepare for a media interview:

1. Do your homework. If this reporter or publication is new to you, do your research. Pour over the media outlet’s website to understand what this publication covers. Find the reporter’s bio on the website and learn what you can. If there’s time, review the reporter’s latest social media posts. Know the reporter and media outlet’s interests and angle before your interview.

2. Know your messages. I can’t stress this enough. Know the main message and supporting messages you want every viewer, reader or listener to walk away with. Know these messages like the back of your hand. Trust me: If you don’t plan what you’re going to say, you’re going to say gibberish and you’ll end up frustrated. No one can speak without preparation and effectively communicate. Plan what you’re going to say and you’ll have more of a chance you’ll feel heard.

3. Prepare for curveballs. Even in the most benign topics, you’ll likely face at least one question that is a curveball. Sometimes it’s because the reporter doesn’t have the depth of knowledge and asks a question out of sheer ignorance. Other times, it’s a curveball that comes out of a reporter’s duty to seek the truth. Don’t get caught off guard. Here’s what you can do: Brainstorm possible curveballs and think ahead of how you’ll respond. Ask others at work, or even family or friends in brainstorming. Get a mix of people who are close to the topic and far removed. An ounce of preparation may prevent you from saying something you wish you hadn’t.

Just as in interviewing for a job, media interviews are worth their time in practice. Each interview you take will grow your skills. You’ll find yourself honing your messages, growing in speaking in confidence and learning how to be on-camera with your nerves in check. Prepare, prepare, prepare, but be gracious to yourself. See media interviews as venues for growth.
