3 ways to create story ideas that gain media attention

You want media to cover your business, but how? The best way to get media attention for your business is to think of a story idea that media will want to cover.

In most newsrooms, reporters have to generate their own story ideas. As a former TV news reporter, I can attest that It’s a lot of work and a whole lot of pressure. The 5 p.m. news comes every day no matter if you arrive at the station with a good story idea or not.

Here’s where you provide the solution: Give reporters a good story idea and they will be likely to use it.

So, how do you come up with a good story idea? Here are three ways to create story ideas that gain media attention:

1. Relate to the audience’s needs. Story ideas have to relate to the media outlet’s audience. Otherwise, no one will watch those newscasts or read those publications. Think of the audience: What issues do they face? What are their motivations? What are their fears? What keeps them up at night? Use that information and think of ways your business is the solution to the audience’s problems.

2. Consider timeliness. News is only news if it is “new.” A pitch about how your snow removal company is offering free services for seniors is timely in the winter, but it sure isn’t news come summer. Consider what is helpful for the moment.

3. Support with research. Your goal in a pitch is to convince the reporter that your story idea is of importance to the audience. Don’t hesitate from using outside sources to make your case. For example, if you’re promoting a cancer walk, include a cancer statistic or two. Research can provide the additional support you need to convince the reporter your story is worth covering.
